Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Adolescents: A Clinician Training Series

Based on direct requests from clinicians and service providers in rural communities, we have developed a training series about nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and how to implement it with adolescent patients to help them successfully quit using nicotine.

While this series is designed for medical professionals, it can also be informative for others who would like to learn more about adolescent vaping and treatment for nicotine addiction.

The four videos in the series cover these topics (more details below):

  • Video 1: Understanding Adolescent Nicotine Use
  • Video 2: Introduction to NRT in Adolescents
  • Video 3: Implementing Nicotine Cessation in Clinical Practice
  • Video 4: Practical Scenarios and Case Studies of NRT in Adolescents

When you start the training, there will be a brief survey, and then the trainings will proceed in order. Please keep in mind that there are time requirements on each video page, and it’s necessary to watch each video in full before an arrow appears to proceed to the next page. We recommend planning on about an hour to move through all the videos and survey questions.

Training video details:

  • Video 1: Begin by learning about adolescent nicotine use, including understanding the epidemiology and physical health implications of nicotine use disorder, the cognitive concerns of youth nicotine use, and the current challenges related to youth vaping/e-cigarette use.
  • Video 2: Dive into learning about treating nicotine use disorder and using NRT as part of a quit plan. You will be guided through lessons about evidence for treating nicotine use disorder in adolescent populations, understanding the risks and benefits of using NRT for e-cigarette cessation with adolescents, and reviewing the NRT methods available and how to prescribe them as part of a quit plan.
  • Video 3: Learn how to implement nicotine cessation in clinical practice. This video introduces a framework for addressing nicotine use in pediatric populations, reviews strategies for brief intervention to address nicotine use, and outlines the elements essential to building successful quit plans with patients.
  • Video 4: This final video presents practical scenarios and real-world case studies as examples of how to use NRT with patients. This includes information on how to taper patients off NRT, practical solutions to challenges when treating nicotine use disorder in adolescent patients, and common scenarios and treatment approaches for successful outcomes with e-cigarette cessation in youth.

Prescriber authorization form: Schools and prescribers may wish to use this template when a student has been prescribed NRT. It outlines a student’s ability to carry NRT in school and use it as needed. We are including this as a Word document in our toolkit so that it can be easily copied and pasted into an electronic medical record system.
